Introducing Coral

Today we’re launching Coral publicly.

The open source data retrieval layer for agents, that increases AI accuracy, cost efficiency and data security.

Agents still work with company data one integration at a time with MCP or CLI tools. It works well for simple lookups, but often fails when retrieval requires filtering, joining, or reasoning across multiple data sources.

Coral gives agents one SQL interface across data sources, as if they were querying a single database.

In our benchmark on complex retrieval tasks, Coral improved Claude Code’s accuracy by 31% and reduced LLM costs by 70% compared with direct data integrations.

Coral increases accuracy and efficiency by enabling fewer, more precise queries. Coral handles virtual tables, parameter hints, caching and cross-source joins. It learns optimisations from every query.

It improves agent data security by keeping broad API credentials outside LLMs; you can instead define scoped access for agents in Coral.

We began building this infrastructure to enable our vertical AI agent, Phoebe, to reach new levels of performance on software reliability tasks. But it quickly became clear how impactful it can be for any agent that needs accurate retrieval across fragmented company data.

So we’re unbundling it.

Phoebe is becoming Coral, and our team is now focused on building the data retrieval layer for AI agents.

This first release is free, open source and self hosted on your laptop or in your own cloud environment. You can use it with any agent or framework, with unlimited data sources and query volume.

You can use Coral to build debugging and incident investigation agents, like Phoebe. And the same pattern applies to agent code generation, security investigations, technical support, transaction risk analysis, customer operations, and other use cases that need reliable access to live company context.

In the sea, coral is a living substrate that helps other creatures flourish, an apt metaphor for what we’re building. We’re eager to hear how Coral can help your agents flourish!
